World of beer

World of beer, mythos beer

Viewed scientifically, beer is a beverage made of starch, boiled with hops and is fermented. Due to the beer regulation act, beer in Germany may only be made from malted barley, hops, yeast and water.

Moreover it has to be fermented for brewing ales. For brewing ales it is allowed to use other kinds of malt. Malt, along these lines are artificially germinated cereals (rice and maize crops are not covered by this regulation).

Since 1987 other types of beers benefit from a decision of the European Court of Justice. They can be declared as beer even if they are not brewed like determined in the beer act.

Actually, when it comes to beer,  Germany is a country of diversity. If you want to taste a new beer every day, it will take you more than 13 years. In Germany there is a total of about 5.000 beers which are produced in 1.200 breweries.

Each region has different beer and almost every city has at least one locally produced beer. Partly this is due to local traditions of decentral governmental structures of past centuries.

In the north you can drink more bitter beers, in the south you can drink “Helles” and wheat (Weizen), in Cologne you drink “Kölsch”, in Düsseldorf they have “Alt”(top-fermented dark beer) and Berliner Weisse (white). There are also export and bock beer, christmas and Oktoberfest beer, Märzen and Krausen and much more.
